BC bud is weed that’s been exclusively sown, grown, and harvested in British Columbia. Aside from its great weed, the province is also an oasis for outdoor activities and natural splendour.
From astounding mountain ranges and temperate rainforests to breathtaking shorelines and everything in between, British Columbia is the definitive destination to get in touch with your wild side.
In addition to its outdoor disposition, the province is the home to Canada’s largest pro-friendly community. 420 Vancouver, the world’s largest 4/20 protest and cannabis celebration on the planet, has seen over 100,000 people and 500 vendors attend the event each year, drawing in cannabis enthusiasts from around the world.
Beginning as a massive act of civil disobedience to create a safe space for community cannabis access, the event eventually transformed into a festival celebrating all things cannabis.
Many believe that this history of cannabis activism gave rise to the province’s bustling BC bud industry, but this is only one piece of the puzzle. Attitudes towards cannabis have always been positive in the region, with many of the world’s most popular strains originating from within its borders.
UBC Chemo, a potent indica, is alleged to originate from the University of British Columbia in the 1970s to help treat intensive chemotherapy’s side effects. Rockstar Kush, also known as BC Rockstar, is a world-renown strain famous for its intense, sedative effects. Island Sweet Skunk, God Bud, and Romulan are other notable strains that you might have heard of – all of which have originated from BC!
Why is British Columbia the Weed Capital of the World?
British Columbia has always been thought of as the black sheep of the Canadian provinces. Closely aligned with its Cascadian brethren, the province is more laisse-faire and cavalier towards weed than its brother and sister provinces to the east.
However, British Columbia’s reputation for BC Bud can’t be solely attributed to its attitude alone. There are 3 reasons why BC bud is the best bud that the world has to offer.
Temperature Climate
British Columbia’s temperate rainforest climate is a significant reason why BC bud is so flavourful and potent. Despite being at a colder latitude, the province enjoys a humid climate thanks to the banana belt, a geographical phenomenon that ensures warmer weather conditions compared to its surrounding areas.
This warmer, more humid climate means that marijuana grown outdoors can enjoy a much longer growing season.
While the majority of cannabis is cultivated indoors, BC bud was originally grown in the foothills of BC’s mountains, where growers could escape the watchful eye of the authorities, which leads us to the second factor:
Mountainous Terrain
British Columbia is home to some of the world’s best hikes, but its rocky terrain also helped cultivate a community of dedicated, strong-willed cannabis growers that persist to this day.
While the federal government legalized cannabis in 2018, it was considered to be an illegal substance for many years up until then. Illegal growers of cannabis were forced to cultivate their green crops indoors, where the risk of detection from the authorities was incredibly high, or to move inland where the government wielded less power.
The province’s naturally hilly and mountainous terrain provided a safe haven for these early cannabis growers. Keeping their crops and themselves hidden away was no longer an issue as the only government authority in the interior tended to be a sparse population of RCMP officers who’re already spread thin enough as it is.
Another benefit of moving inland? The climate became even more warm and humid the further inland you went. The Kootenays, the Okanagan Valley, and the Osoyoos region are all areas known for their warm, humid weather and fertile growing environment.
For the early cannabis cultivators looking for a safe refuge to grow BC bud, they couldn’t have picked a better place than the mountainous BC interior.
The Cannabis Community
Although we’ve touched on this above, BC’s cannabis community is such a large influence on BC bud that we thought it relevant to talk about it in more detail.
British Columbia has always been open and receptive towards cannabis. In 2012, an opinion poll found that 61 percent of British Columbians supported the legalization of weed, compared to 53% in the rest of Canada.
Even before legalization, Vancouver, Victoria, and other nearby cities could consume cannabis openly without fear of legal repercussions, with the police often turning a blind eye. In 2004, there were already several weed cafes operating where weed could be smoked openly even though it was still illegal nationwide.
420 Vancouver, the world’s largest weed festival, was also started in British Columbia and is held annually every year on April 20th, the internationally recognized day of celebration for the smoking of cannabis.
As you can see, public opinion towards cannabis has always been positive towards weed. Now that cannabis is legal, is it any surprise that the province produces 40% of all Canadian cannabis?
